CCR & Booker T. Jones - Fantasy Studio Session

Creedence Clearwater Revival with Booker T. Jones
'Fantasy Studio Session '70'
Fantasy Studio, California 1970
(Mainstreet : MST 101)

Studio Recording
Encoded: 128 Kbps MP3

Track List: (Artwork Included)
1  Jam Warm Up  13:19
2  99 1/2  6:27
3  Proud Mary  5:41
4  Travelin´ Band  5:11
5  Born On The Bayou  6:18
6  Down On The Corner  5:07
7  99 1/2 Reprise  2:50
8  I Put A Spell On You  15:39
9  Final Jam  6:38

It didn't get a lot of fanfare, and maybe it wasn't intended to produce any music for release. But Booker T. Jones of Booker T. & the MG's did record a jam session with Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1970 at Fantasy Studio. This bootleg documents it, with 67 minutes of music, in good though not great studio quality. Like many jams between superstars, of course, it doesn't sound as wonderful on disc as it might in your head. It just sounds like Creedence with a good organ player, running through some of their most popular songs rather informally. Apparently it wasn't seen as an opportunity to work up new material or take on cover tunes that CCR hadn't done on their records. In fact, six of the nine tracks were versions of songs that Creedence put on their early releases, including the hits "Proud Mary," "Down on the Corner," "Born on the Bayou," and "Travelin' Band," as well as and two versions of "Ninety-nine and a Half (Won't Do)." The other tracks are basic bluesy instrumental groove jams -- nice enough, but not any with riffs that sound like they could have been developed into distinctive songs. (Note that the track identified as "I Put a Spell on You" is an instrumental that doesn't seem to have more than a casual resemblance to the Screamin' Jay Hawkins classic that Creedence covered on their first album.) Part of the reason the CD's so long is that there's a fair amount of bumbling around between songs, and while John Fogerty does sing (and with passion), the instrumental balance and presence of the vocals in the mix aren't ideal (not to mention the presence of occasional loud electronic beeps). There aren't many Creedence bootlegs around, though, and this is a neat if not earthshaking chance to hear them playing live and playing fairly well, with a celebrity guest helping them out. -Original

Eric Clapton [1973.01.13] Clapton's Rainbow Concert

Eric Clapton
'The Rainbow Concert 1973'
(1998 Empress Valley Supreme Disc)
The Rainbow Theatre, London, England
January 13th, 1973 --> Late Show Only

"It really wasn't difficult to get people to help. In fact, you might be surprised at a few names I could mention who would have given their right arms to join in this band."
- Pete Townshend

"I did that very much against my will. It was purely Townshend's idea. I'm indebted to him."
- Eric Clapton

Fans might be familiar with Eric Clapton's 1973 Rainbow Concert as it was officially released. However, Clapton played two shows that night and only the early show was released.

A soundboard recording of the two shows surfaced in 1998 from Empress Valley as Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert - 25th Anniversary Edition. Interestingly, the original album (featuring only six tracks), wasn't that hot among fans and critics. For example, the album was not highlighted at all in the section on Eric Clapton in The New Illustrated Rock Handbook (1986). And it's not even listed among Clapton's albums in The Rolling Stone Record Guide (1979).

This is what Bud Scoppa wrote in Rolling Stone magazine #146:

"Townshend's and Wood's guitars and Winwood's organ surround Clapton in a protective aural capsule. He, in turn, works cautiously, but caution isn't Clapton's way – his art is founded on risk-taking in its absolute form, spontaneity. The kid glove approach may have been necessary: Clapton is occasionally indecisive and confused. But he also cuts loose as much as his setting allows in "Badge," and he's solid, if not inspired, for most of the show.

"The material contributes to the pervasive melancholy. The six songs chosen from the evening's longer program are either moody, slow-paced or both. Even "Roll It Over" and "After Midnight" get moderate, deliberate treatments. The album's excitement, such as it is, comes from the layered instrumental textures, the solemn measured movement into climaxes that are majestic if not explosive, and the nuances of Clapton's restrained singing and playing. In these respects, the first and last tracks, "Badge" and Hendrix' "Little Wing," are most impressive.

"Rainbow Concert presents some of the best people in rock at their most egoless and supportive. But the crucial question – is Clapton able to come out of isolation and return to his music and to the people who care about it? – remains unanswered." On hindsight, and especially after listening to the complete second set, this was a key concert that helped to rechannel Clapton's musical energies.

This is what Clapton fan Nathant said about the late show at the Rainbow: "This comes from a four-disc boot of the famous Rainbow Concert that Pete Townshend put together to try and give Clapton the support he needed to kick his drug addiction. The first two discs were the early show, and the second two were the evening show. The official release is taken only from the early show, The two discs included are the evening show except Key To The Highway that was used for the official release.

"Plus it's a little bit of history knowing this was the event that motivated him to get clean and get his life back together. The only flaw is that the first track, Layla, is cut of for most off the beginning.
"An excellent recording and performance! Superior in quality to the Slowhand Masterfile release, and of course blows away the official release hands down!" In the year after the Rainbow Concert, Clapton recovered from his heroin addiction and recorded 461 Ocean Boulevard.
